Dr. Zhiyong Liu received his bachelor’s (1998–2003) and master’s (2003–2006) degrees from the School of Basic Medical Sciences and Forensic Medicine, West China School of Sichuan University, China. He then completed his Ph.D. training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, USA, from 2006 to 2011. After earning his doctorate, Dr. Liu continued his research at the HHMI-Janelia Research Campus, USA, from 2012 to 2016. In August 2016, he returned to China to establish and lead the Auditory System Development and Regeneration Research Group at the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (formerly the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences). In January 2025, Dr. Liu relocated his lab to the National Institute of Biological Sciences (NIBS), Beijing.
